Snow Bound Book Blast

Today in Alli's World we are helping with the BOOK BLAST for Snow Bound by Elizabeth Kirke. This book totally seems like it would be up my alley. I've had a fondness for vampires, really all paranormal type creatures, for years now.  Elizabeth and I have very similar last names, I mean we are an "e" away from being related, right? (But alas we are not.) And there is a giveaway. All together this seems like a pretty awesome Book Blast to me!

More than Magic Swag Giveaway

After learning how to use magic and fighting vampires, anyone would be bored going back to normal college life. Worst of all, Jen misses the friends she made over the summer. Naturally, Jen is all too happy to accept an invitation to go skiing with the gang during winter break.

She gears up for two weeks of snow, magic, and fun. Just when everything seems to be going great, an uninvited guest turns up. Soon the skiers aren’t the only things going downhill. Jen thought that vampires were just about the most dangerous thing the magical world could throw at her. Unfortunately, she’s about to learn that people with no magic at all can be just as deadly...

Bio:
Elizabeth Kirke wanted to be an author before she even knew what an author was. She used to say that she wanted to be an artist, but that was only because she was too young to write and had to tell stories with pictures instead. She hasn't stopped writing since she learned how. It wasn't long before she dreamed of becoming an author and couldn't be happier now that that dream is a reality.

If she isn't writing...well, let's be honest; if she isn't writing she's probably on Facebook thinking that she should start writing. But, if she isn't writing or on Facebook, she's probably doing something involving books, baking, gardening, or yarn. In an ideal world, she'd be reading and knitting while something from the garden is in the oven. Then again, in an ideal world, she'd have a flock of ducks and a couple of goats.

Like most slightly-nosy, avid readers, Elizabeth can't resist trying to catch a peek at books she sees people reading when out in public to see if she can figure out what it is. While doing just that one day, she realized that it would probably be the coolest-thing-ever if she caught a complete stranger reading one of her books. That's her new dream.

Review: Shades of Earth

Title: Shades of Earth
Series: Across the Universe
Author: Beth Revis
Genre: YA
Source: Purchased
Fave Quote:
"Don't you see? Those monsters you've been so worried about. Not aliens. People. The monsters have always been people."

More info on Shades of Earth on Goodreads.

Shades of Earth is the third book in Beth Revis' Across the Universe series. I read the first two books, Across the Universe and A Million Suns, before I started blogging but I REALLY loved them. Which surprised me because before that I'd never thought I'd like a "space book" so much. (Yay for getting out of my reading comfort zone and finding books I really dig!)  The thing about the books in this series that is so awesome to me is not the space element but the relationships and the exploration of what it really means to be human.

I absolutely devoured Shades of Earth. I been wanting to read it since I finished A Million Suns over a year ago. So while I might have wanted to pace myself, I just had to know what was going to happen. Oh. My. Gosh. My first thought upon finishing Shades of Earth was I loved it, hated it and then loved it again. There was just so much going on in this one. I really don't know how I can talk about without being spoilery but y'all...this is a must read series.

The whole series and especially Shade of Earth has this murder, mystery, romance, sci-fi space thing going on. I mean really, it's something for everyone. The mystery will keep you turning the pages and the seemingly ill-fated romance will pull at your heartstrings. Just know that it seems Beth takes pleasure in torturing her characters and readers. Be ready for an amazingly wonderful emotional roller coaster!

I gave Shades of Earth 5 out of 5 stars. You really do need to read the first two books first and they are all so worth it. Shades of Earth ended the way a book and a series should. I still care about the characters but there is an actual ending, there is enough left open that you wonder where the characters now or 10 years from now. But I really appreciate that there is a resolution.

Also, if you haven't read Across the Universe yet, then don't forget to enter this Alli's World giveaway for a signed paperback copy! (Just a few hours left to enter!)

Lastly, just for fun, here's a pic of my nails and shoes that I wore to the Breathless Reads event! (See above link for the giveaway.) By the way,  Beth loved my shoes! :)

About the Book:

After learning how to use magic and fighting vampires, anyone would be bored going back to normal college life. Aside from Rak, they’re the only other magics she knows and she hasn’t seen them in almost five months!

Jen is all too happy to accept an invitation to go skiing with the gang. She gears up for two weeks of snow, magic, and fun. Just when everything seems to be going great, an uninvited guest turns up. Soon the skiers aren’t the only things going downhill. Jen thought that vampires were just about the most dangerous thing the magical world could throw at her. Breathless Recap + Giveaway

Last Tuesday the Mister and me attended the Breathless Reads stop in Greenville, South Carolina. We had a great time! We both took off work and just spent the day hanging out together.

~~~~
"Maybe this should be called the Death and Kissing Tour!"
~Fiona Paul~
~~~~

We got to the event location, Fiction Addiction, early; we got our VIP tickets and books. Hubs and I were very impressed with this great indie bookstore. Then we enjoyed Greenville a little bit before heading back to the store for the BIG event!

Our view from our front row VIP seats!

Left to right:
Fiona Paul--Venom
Elizabeth Richards--Black City,
Fran Bullington (moderator),
Jessica Spotswood--Born Wicked,
Beth Revis--Across the Universe, A Million Suns, Shades of Earth
Morgan Rhodes--Falling Kingdoms

Morgan Rhodes, author of Falling Kingdoms

Why YA?
(paraphrasing from my horrible shorthand notes from the event)

Elizabeth Richards--It's an interesting time in life, all the firsts such as love and kisses, etc. And it's great for drama.

Fiona Paul--First, write what you love to read. Second, anything can happen {in YA}.

Jessica Spotswood--Loves YA and how it can be a mix of genres.

Beth Revis--YA is the beating heart of literature. (*Alli's note: L.O.V.E. this!)

Morgan Rhodes--Writing YA for was not conscious, some stories just fit YA better. Also, adult fiction is so jaded.

Beth Revis, author of:
Across the Universe, A Million Suns, & Shades of Earth

What were the authors reading/writing as a teen?

Jessica Spotswood--Gone With the Wind, citing how awful and selfish Scarlett is but also pointing out she was smart and not valued because she was a woman.

Beth Revis--Hated Gone With the Wind! She did like Little Women, though she had only read the annotated children's version. Revis told us about the time she passionately disagreed with her professor over the ending.

Morgan Rhodes--recalled writing a book report on Lucky by Jackie Collins in ninth grade which got her into some trouble!

Fiona Paul--likes fun reads! She was into books like Sweet Valley High!

Elizabeth Richards--didn't read much when she was younger. She did write some bad romance where the geeky, Gothic girl who magically gets the guy. (*Alli's note: Love that!)

Jessica Spotswood--Born Wicked

Do's and don'ts: advice for aspiring writers.

Fiona Paul--Do read...everything! Find out what works and what doesn't work. Don't get discouraged by criticism. Some people just have bad taste! (Alli's note: Love that too!)

Elizabeth Richards--Get a good critical partner and accept the critique. Don't invite your agent/editor to a bachelor party by mistake. ;)

Jessica Spotswood--Write the book ONLY YOU can write! Don't RUSH to get published.

Beth Revis--Don't give up!

Morgan Rhodes--Write the book of your heart. Don't give up; it can be a hard road.

Elizabeth Richards--Black City

What are the author's odd writing habits?

Jessica Spotswood--Is a night owl; she writes very late. She also drinks tea while writing.

Beth Revis--Is also a night owl. She'll stay up all night and then sleep to noon.

Morgan Rhodes--Needs silence to get in the zone. She used to need ginger ale and chocolate. ;)

Fiona Paul--Had to employ a rewards system for herself. If she writes 500 words she can check Twitter. If she writes 500 more she can check her email. This is her way to self motivate.

Elizabeth Richards--Has to put her phone away. She stays caffeinated with a Pepsi Max and keeps a band on her wrist to "ping" herself when she gets off topic.

Fiona Paul--Venom

How do these Breathless authors deal with writers block?

Morgan Rhodes--Thinks writers block is a wrong step in the book. She is an outliner and that helps her avoid block. But sometimes she gets writers block just creatively drained.

Jessica Spotswood--Gets writers block when the "fear of suck" takes over. She just has to get out of her head at that point. She and Morgan both employ programs like "Write or Die" to help fight the block.

Beth Revis--Either kills, blows up or deletes all to unstuck.

Elizabeth Richards--Get your mind on something else. She often does this by, doing the dishes or taking a shower. (Beth said she has NEVER been stuck enough to do dishes! :)

Fiona Paul--Works on two stories at a time. So if one gives her trouble she switches to the other for a while.

Signing time!

About Tara:

Tara Fuller writes novels. Some about grim reapers. Some about witches. All of course are delightfully full of teen angst and kissing. Tara grew up in a one stop light town in Oklahoma where once upon a time she stayed up with a flash light reading RL Stine novels and only dreamed of becoming a writer. She has a slight obsession with music and a shameless addiction for zombie fiction, Mystery Science Theater, and black and white mochas. Tara no longer lives in a one stop light town. Now she lives with her family in a slightly larger town in North  Carolina where they have at least three stoplights.

Goals and Giveaways

So 2013 is here in full affect! I posted yesterday on my Facebook page about some of my goals for 2013. (I don't really do resolutions because I NEVER stick to them!)

My goals include:

1. Trying/doing things I've never done or go places I've never been before. Such things include going to a swim meet and gymnastics meet (University of Georgia, lookout we're coming for you!). Also, I really want to try Indian food. Random, right? I really hope I continue to take advantage of opportunities as they are presented when it comes to new things.

I don't really have any specific plans for the following but I'd also like to attend a live ballet performance, live orchestra performance, there are several restaurants I haven't tried in my area, and I'd love to go to Freedom Weekend Aloft to see all the hot air balloons, go to a Greek Festival, Shakespeare's Tavern, Medieval Times, etc. There is just so many cool things to do! And there are places I'd love to go NYC, LA, Paris, etc. There's a BIG world out there with lots of things to see and do, I just want want to make the most of this life.

2. This year I want to read more and blog more. My to-be-read pile is OUT OF CONTROL! I really want to read some of the books I own and have been wanting to read for a while now. There are several awesome books coming out this year, which is going to increase my reading load but what a GREAT problem to have! I also want to blog about what I read, the places I go and the things I do. If nothing else I just want remember all the great moments these things provide me. And I want to share it with all of you!

3. My last goal is just to stay positive. I'm always fine as long as things go exactly as planned but the moment that things go the slightest bit awry I totally loose my cool. Sometimes it just seems like the problem in the moment is the only thing I can see. So this year, I really want to focus on not freaking out when things aren't the way I thought they'd be. I want to remember that the problems don't last forever and just because things are "perfect" doesn't mean they aren't good (and who knows, maybe even better!)

To celebrate the New Year I have a treat you from my "personal collection". I'm still new to this so I'm still trying to collect items for you guys but I have some swag I'd love to pass on to 2 lucky Alli's World readers. There are random bookmarks (at least one signed by the author!), temporary tattoos, and stickers in each prize pack. The swag looks a little something like this:

Jack Templar Tour with Guest Character Post

Image from Goodreads
Orphan Jack Templar has no memory of his parents and only the smallest details from his Aunt Sophie about how they died. The day before Jack's fourteenth birthday, things start to change for him. At first it's great: A sudden new strength helps him defend his nose-picking friend "T-Rex" from the school bully, and even his crush, Cindy Adams, takes notice. But then a mysterious girl named Eva arrives and tells him two facts that will change his life forever. First, that he's the descendant of a long line of monster hunters and he's destined to be in the family business. Second, that there's a truce between man and monster that children are off-limits...until their fourteenth birthday! Jack has only one day before hundreds of monsters will descend on his little town of Sunnyvale and try to kill him.

As if that weren't enough, things get even more complicated when Jack discovers that the Lord of the Creach (as the monsters are collectively known) holds a personal grudge against him and will do anything to see that Jack has a slow and painful death. To stay alive and save his friends, Jack will have to battle werewolves, vampires, harpies, trolls, zombies and more. But perhaps the most dangerous thing he must face is the truth about his past. Why do the other hunters call him the last Templar? Why do they whisper that he may be the "One?" Why do the monsters want him dead so badly? Even as these questions plague him, he quickly discovers survival is his new full-time job and that in the world of monster hunters, nothing is really what it seems.

You can pick up a copy at any of these place:

Now for a super special treat...
a character guest post from
Jack Templar's Best Friend...
Will Akers!

Hi everyone. This is Will Akers, Jack Templar’s right hand man. You probably heard about me in our book Jack Templar Monster Hunter. I say “our” book since it really could have been called Jack And Will: Monster Hunters. But I guess since Jack wrote the entire thing, he felt like going with the title he had.

I know Jack and Eva were pretty mad when the book got out to regular people. You know…non-hunters. Or, as some people at the Academy call them, Creach-bait.

But I was happy the book got out. I know, I know, everyone’s worried about how reading the book attracts monsters to the reader and inevitably drags the reader into our world of man versus monsters. You know what I say? About time.

I mean, come on. Who in their right mind wouldn’t want to become a monster
hunter? It’s by far the coolest thing that’s happened to me, I’ll tell you that much.

Even when we’re being chased by a flock of mad harpies, or facing down an entire field of zombies, or being pursued by Ren Lucre, the Dark Lord of the Creach himself, I was still having the time of my life.

The way I look at it, what’s not to love? You’re doing something really important, you’re helping others, you get to use cool weapons and fight against heinous monsters. Oh, and you don’t have to go to school. As far as I’m concerned, that’s like
winning the lottery.

I guess there’s the fact that there aren’t many hunters who live past thirty. The luck runs out for even the best hunters eventually. Turns out no matter how good you are, if you try to face down a pack of werewolves or a coven of vampires on your own, it’s not going to turn out well. But I’m only fourteen. Thirty is forever away so I’m not too worried about it.

One thing I do worry about is all this talk of Jack being “the One.” Other hunters who meet him always have a weird reaction when they find out who he is. They either keep their distance like they are scared of him or they act like he’s some kind of celebrity. I mean, he’s super cool and all, but he’s just Jack. I just hope that he doesn’t start taking too many chances trying to live up to his own hype. Either way, I’ll be right next to him. As we say, Do your duty, come what may. I look at keeping Jack alive as my duty and I intend to see it through, no matter what happens.

I hope you join the fight. It’s quite a ride.
Will Akers.

Author Bio:

Selah Janel has been blessed with a giant imagination since she was little and convinced that fairies lived in the nearby state park or vampires hid in the abandoned barns outside of town. Her appreciation for a good story was enhanced by a love of reading, the many talented storytellers that surrounded her, and a healthy curiosity for everything. A talent for warping everything she learned didn’t hurt, either. She gravitates to writing fantasy and horror, but can be convinced to pursue any genre if the idea is good enough. Often her stories feature the unknown creeping into the “real” world and she loves to find the magical in the mundane.

She has four e-books with No Boundaries Press, including the historical vampire story ‘Mooner’ and the contemporary short ‘The Other Man’. Her work has also been included in ‘The MacGuffin’, ‘The Realm Beyond’, ‘Stories for Children Magazine’, and the upcoming Wicked East Press anthology ‘Bedtime Stories for Girls’. She likes her music to rock, her vampires lethal, her fairies to play mind games, and her princesses to hold their own.

Let me tell you why I love me some YA! YAY!!

These are the reasons I love Young Adult literature in no particular order. Maybe I'm wrong on some of them but if that's the case I don't want to be right!

1. I am never, ever , never, ever gonna grow up! YUCK! (And I guess my reading preference reflects that!)

2. I firmly believe that YA authors have to work harder than adult authors to create as good of a story. An adult author can throw in a sex scene or extreme violence to amp up the excitement or use a whole bunch of cuss words throughout. A YA author doesn't have the option to deploy "cheap tricks" to get the job done. (Now I love me some adult fiction too, nothing like a good romance novel for mind candy! But some of the most thought provoking books I've ever read are YA.)

3. YA seems to be able to generate more excitement. (Such as events, release parties, blog tours, etc; it's just really cool world to be a part of!)

4. YA fans, bloggers, authors are some of the best people you can meet!

5. YA books make better movies and TV shows.

6. I read YA because I kind of want to remember my "glory days" of youth or wish I had such days.

7. Or...I want to remember why it's better not to be so young anymore.

8. The boys of YA are totally the most crush worthy. (And this is not creepy because they are FICTIONAL, after all.

9. YA is in a way more smexy than adult. The tension build-up in a good YA can not be beat.

10.  Stephenie Meyer, J.K. Rowling, John Green, Maggie Stiefvater, Jennifer L. Armentrout, Beth Revis and all the other great YA authors out there for giving me worlds I want to be a part of!

Deity by Jennifer L. Armentrout

**********************
I tried to tone it down but this
whole post could be
**SPOILERY**
So if you haven't read Deity yet and don't want anything spoiled, please don't read anymore.

Just know I LOVED it and thought it is possibly the best on in the Covenant Series yet.
**********************
Seriously...don't read any further if you are
anti-spoilers!
**********************
You've been warned...
you could skip down and still enter the giveaways though!

Click here for Goodreads info on Deity.

My thoughts on Deity: VERY good. It is steamy and sexy. There is some hot hooking up going on. (That Alex...play on player!) Alex awakens and book ends on cliff hanger. The plot thickens between the council and Lucian. The gods are more active. More people die.

Like I said in the very big and bold section, I really, really liked this book! JLA is just such a good story teller. I feel like there is a good balance of action and romance. I gave it 5 out of 5 stars. I recommend this book and this series. Great YA reading material!

And I love when books lend me a creative opportunity. (For another example see my Obsidian necklace here.) So when I read a certain section in the ARC, I knew I wanted something "from Aiden" in my collection!

This is what I come up with:

This is what I started with, I couldn't find what I was
looking for but I found this pretty rose shaped
charm at my local craft store
and added a little glitter.
(And yes I cheated and used glitter nail polish!)

"...a dark-red crystal had been intricately designed into a rose in bloom, carved as if the petals were reaching up toward the sun."

"Lights winked and danced off the precious stone and it immediately warmed to my skin."

Not exactly what I originally had in mind and certainly not exactly how JLA described it, but I kind of like how it turned out.
I'm almost scared to ask but what do you think?
